In many traditions of France, the singers are only very rarely professional, however they are or were often invited to the wedding to sing. Mr. Sales liked to host wedding dances with a repertoire of songs to dance.
Jean-Philippe Denis Sales, who transmitted “The rain is falling on us”, was born in 1889 and was a farmer, father of four children. His eldest son and his youngest daughter would have inherited their taste for singing from their father.
When recording the song, Sylvette Beraud-Williams notes that although he was already very much diminished, he still had a fairly strong voice and a great joy in singing, one could easily imagine his habit of singing in public. He was often invited to host wedding dances, with a repertoire of dancing songs that he beat to his feet.
During this unique meeting, Sylvette was at the very beginning of her collection that she started progressing from one informant to another by word of mouth. It is undoubtedly in this way that he was mentioned the strong reputation of singer of Jean-Philippe Denis Sales.
If he chose to sing to her "The rain is falling on us" (although it is not a song to dance), it is because Sylvette was interested in everything related to "traditional" life and its rituals, central object of his research at the beginning of his collection.
Dans nombre de traditions de l’hexagone français, les chanteurs et chanteuses ne sont que rarement professionnels, néanmoins ils sont ou étaient souvent invités dans les noces pour y chanter.
Jean-Philippe Denis Sales, qui a transmis la chanson « La pluie tombe sur nous », est né en 1889 et était agriculteur, père de quatre enfants. Son fils aîné et sa fille cadette auraient hérité de leur père le goût pour le chant.
Lors de l’enregistrement de la chanson, Sylvette Beraud - Williams note que bien qu’il ait été déjà très diminué, il avait encore une voix assez forte et une belle joie de chanter, on pouvait facilement imaginer son habitude de chanter en public. Il était souvent invité pour animer les bals de mariages, avec un répertoire de chansons à danser qu’il rythmait aux pieds.
Lors de cette unique rencontre, Sylvette en était au tout début de sa collecte qu’elle a commencé en progressant d’un informateur à l’autre, par le bouche-à-oreille. C’est sans doute de cette façon qu’on lui a mentionné la forte réputation de chanteur de Monsieur Jean-Philippe Denis Sales.
S'il a choisi de lui chanter « La pluie tombe sur nous » (bien que ce ne soit pas une chanson à danser), c’est parce que Sylvette était intéressée par tout ce qui avait trait à la vie «traditionnelle » et à ses rituels, objet central de sa recherche au début de sa collecte.
