The tānpurā is a long fretless lute on which a melody is played in a loop acting as a drone; the strings are four, five or six.
An essential instrument of Indian classical music, the smooth and rounded shape of the bridge and a small silk thread inserted between the strings and this makes the strings "curl", thus reinforcing the presence of the harmonics and creating this characteristic sound.
